History Of This DVD By Sellers Crain,
Jr.
Minister, Rivergate Church of Christ,
Madison, TN
The Rivergate Church of Christ in Madison, TN, a suburb of Nashville,
has been conducting a summer series for about ten years with excellent
topics and exceptional speakers This year we entitled our series
Seeking
God's Answers to Serious Life Issues. We selected topics that are issues
with which many people are faced. Topics such as "Bringing Your Family
Closer Together," "Growing Through Grief: The Loss of a Companion,"
"Living with Alzheimer" and "Escaping the Debt Trap." Sometime ago I
became acquainted with Bob Spurlin. After reading his book
Don't Ever
Give Up!, I purchased several copies to distribute to people I felt
would benefit from this information. All of those to whom I have given a
copy of this book have expressed how much it helped them. When I was
considering speakers for our summer series this year, Bob was one of the
first people who came to mind. One of the topics we had planned to
discuss was "Coping With Debilitating Illness." Who better than Bob Spurlin could discuss this subject from personal experience and with
pathos and feeling? Bob has been living with MS for ten years, but while
this progressive disease has ravaged his body, it did not dampen his
spirits or his desire to teach God's Word to others. In spite of the
fact that he is confined to bed, he has written three books, and he
often speaks to congregations over a phone setup. We first thought of
doing that at Rivergate, but I wanted people to not only hear Bob, but
to see him. With that in mind, I asked Bob if he would allow me to video
tape him for the session on Debilitating Illness and also to do another
session for us on "Coping with Drug and Alcohol Abuse." Bob's brother
was murdered as a result of involvement with drugs.
Bob did a masterful job presenting both of these subjects. He is an
excellent writer, but he is also an effective preacher. In discussing
the lessons with Bob, I suggested that it would be good to put both
lessons on DVD to make them available for others.
These messages will
touch your heart, they will inspire you to greater service for God, and
they will bless your life.

"Don't
Ever Give Up" - This is the newest book published
and after a short number of weeks a reprint has become necessary.
Bob Spurlin's latest book is a 182-page book with 13 chapters and
discussion questions at the end of the chapters. It is usable for
the Bible class curriculum, or for personal study. The
difficulties and trials of life can be overwhelming at times.
Regardless of our station in life; whether we be rich, poor, high
on the social ladder or social outcast, misfortune and hardship
will occur to each of us. "Don't Ever Give-Up" is not just a
pleasant slogan to the ear, but rather it is the only formula
allowing us to meet the hurts and hardships that confront us. The
author of these lines became ill with multiple sclerosis causing a
bedridden existence for more than eight years. Never was it
imagined that a preacher enthusiastic about his work with an
all-consuming schedule expected his work shortened to the life of
a shut-in. A fundamental lesson learned by this author is coming
to grip with the unexpected. When calamity and heartache strikes
at our door may we draw strength from our faith. When alone and
life seems its worst, "Don't Ever Give-Up" (James 4:14-17). |
